Description A French general who attained the position of Marshal of France during WW1 when he led the French Army to victory at the Battle of Verdun, during which he became known as The Lion of Verdun. From 1940 to 1944, during WW2, he served as head of the collaborationist regime of Vichy France. After the war, Pétain was tried and convicted for treason and sentenced to life in prison.
