Name Hodge, Francis Vere
Description A British Army officer who was part of the 1st Air Landing Light Battery RA. In 1943 he joined No 1 Combined Operations Bombardment Unit, to provide forward observation parties to direct Royal Navy gunfire onto shore targets during amphibious operations. He was awarded a Military Cross for his skilful directing of the fire of the cruiser Newfoundland without regard for his own safety during the invasion of Sicily. He dropped into Ranville during D-Day as part of the 5th Parachute Brigade directing the battleship Ramillies. After the war he entered the Church and was ordained in 1948. On his retirement in 1984 he was the chairman of the trustees of Glastonbury Abbey.
